Die Vulkaninsel Tristan da Cunha zeichnet sich vor allem durch die eindrucksvolle Landschaft aus. Die einzige Siedlung auf der abgelegensten bewohnten Insel ist Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. 300 Menschen leben und arbeiten hier. Dorthin kommt man nur mit dem Schiff. Es gibt eine anglikanische und eine katholische Kirche, ein Postamt und eine Krabbenfabrik. Diejenigen, die nicht in der Krabbenfabrik arbeiten, widmen sich der Landwirtschaft. Nur Bewohner der Insel können dort Land kaufen, allerdings ist die Größe beschränkt, damit niemand den anderen ausbeutet. Ein wenig Gastwirtschaft für Besucher gibt es auch. Bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs war eine britische Garnison auf der Insel. Sie wurde ursprünglich dort stationiert, um zu verhindern, dass Frankreich Napoléon Bonapartes befreit, der auf St. Helena interniert war. 1506 entdeckte der portugiesische Admiral Tristao da Cunha die Insel. Er schaffte es allerdings nicht zu landen. 1816 schließlich annektierte das britische Empire die Inseln. Die Inselgruppe Tristan da Cunha gehört zum britischen Überseegebiet ST. Helena.
Sehenswürdigkeiten
Der Vulkan Queen Mary’s Peak ist der höchste Punkt der Insel. Seltene Tiere wie der Tristan Albatrosse können Sie auf Tristan da Cunha sehen. Die Insel ist sehr naturbelassen und es finden sich dort seltene Pflanzen, wie die Nertera Depressa.
Wissenswertes
Das Café und Albatross Bar befinden sich an der Prince Philip Hall. Dort gibt es leichte Gerichte und Getränke.
